This is a freshly repadded used Buffet Crampon Paris R13 series clarinet, serial number 272928.
They are truly a hidden gem in the clarinet world and a cool piece of Buffet history.Buffet R13 As one of Buffet’s historic models, the professional R13 clarinet was first produced by the legendary Robert Carrée in 1955, and is still one of the world’s favourite professional instruments, due to its flexibility and brightness in sound that lends the instrument to many repertoires. These ‘pre-R13’ clarinets offer a unique advantage to the buyer by giving them a chance to purchase a fantastic professional instrument for the price of a new intermediate clarinet. In modern days, the wood used for the current R-13 is less dense and stained black to hide imperfections. The wood has been claimed to be of the finest grade, very hard, extremely dense, and naturally dark.
The wood used for these years was allowed to air dry for over 20 years to ensure that the clarinet wouldn’t crack. The main reason why these vintage pro-level Buffet clarinets are coveted and sought after is the quality of the grenadilla wood these instruments were made of. Design wise, the clarinet is sound as was touted as Buffet’s professional model in the early 1950’s. Therefore most musicians refer to these instruments as “Pre-R13’s”. The modern R-13 was introduced in 1955 at serial number 50000. This Buffet clarinet is what started the legend of the R-13! Ironically, this model was actually advertised as an R-13 as well, but has some minor design changes compared to the R-13 we know today.
